Porsche 718 2016 Review

The Porsche 718, introduced in 2016, marks the beginning of the new generation for Porsche’s mid-engine sports cars, effectively the fourth generation if we consider its lineage that includes the Boxster and Cayman models. The 718 nameplate, a nod to Porsche’s racing heritage, signifies a significant update with a shift to turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

Exterior Design

The Porsche 718 showcases a sharpened exterior design that includes wider front air intakes, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, and a more pronounced rear with the distinctive Porsche badging. The ground clearance is sportily low, approximately 130mm, enhancing its aerodynamic efficiency and sporty stance.

Interior Design

The Porsche 718 features a driver-focused cockpit with a high level of craftsmanship and premium materials. The interior is snug but comfortable, with sport seats that provide excellent support during spirited driving. Boot space is cleverly distributed in both the front and rear compartments, offering a combined space of around 275 liters, which is quite practical for a sports car.

Performance

Performance is paramount in the 718, with the base model featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer engine producing 300 horsepower, while the S models receive a 2.5-liter engine with 350 horsepower. These engines are mated to either a precise 6-speed manual or a rapid 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, delivering exhilarating acceleration and a top speed that can exceed 170 mph.

Ride Quality

Ride quality in the 718 balances sportiness with daily drivability. The suspension is firm, keeping the car planted and stable through corners, yet it’s engineered to absorb bumps and provide comfort over longer journeys. Porsche’s Active Suspension Management (PASM) system, available as an option, allows for an even greater range of adjustability.

Safety & Technology

The 718 comes equipped with a suite of safety and technology features, including Porsche Stability Management (PSM), advanced airbag technology, and available driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. The infotainment system is user-friendly, with Porsche Communication Management (PCM) offering connectivity and navigation.
